Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and melt 1/2 cup of unsalted butter in a 9x9-inch baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together 1 1/4 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, 1/3 cup cocoa, 3/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon baking soda. Add 2/3 cup buttermilk and 1 teaspoon vanilla; mix until smooth.
  3. In another bowl, blend 1 cup light brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa powder.
  4. Pour the chocolate batter into the baking dish over the melted butter without stirring. Sprinkle the brown sugar-cocoa mixture on top.
  5. Carefully pour 1 1/2 cups of hot water over the cobbler without stirring.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the top is set and the edges are bubbling.
