Ingredients

Chili Base
  • 1 lb Ground Beef or Turkey Leaner ground turkey is a healthier option.
  • 28 oz Canned Tomatoes (diced or crushed) Opt for fire-roasted for a smoky taste.
  • 2 cups Kidney Beans Feel free to swap with black beans or chickpeas.
  • 1 cup Bell Peppers Mix colors for a vibrant presentation.
  • 1 large Onion Sauté before adding for deeper flavor.
Spice Mix
  • 2 tbsp Chili Powder Adjust the amount to taste.
  • 1 tsp Cumin Freshly ground is best.
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder 1 clove of fresh garlic = 1/8 tsp garlic powder.
  • 1 tsp Oregano Dried is recommended for even flavor.
Moisture and Flavor
  • 4 cups Beef or Chicken Broth Vegetable broth is a great substitute.
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce Balsamic vinegar can be used if needed.
Optional Toppings
  • 1/2 cup Sour Cream Greek yogurt is a great alternative.
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheese Cheddar or Monterey Jack melts beautifully.
  • 1/4 cup Fresh Cilantro Omit if you’re not a fan.

Equipment

  • Crockpot

Method

Preparation
  1. Dice your onion and bell peppers into bite-sized pieces. If using ground beef or turkey, brown it in a skillet over medium-high heat until it's no longer pink, about 5–7 minutes. Once cooked, drain excess fat, then transfer the meat into your crockpot.
  2. Pour in the canned tomatoes, kidney beans, and sautéed onions and bell peppers into the crockpot. Stir to ensure the ingredients are well-mixed.
  3. Sprinkle in the chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, and oregano, adjusting amounts to taste. Mix these spices into the ingredients.
  4. Pour in the beef or chicken broth, and add a dash of Worcestershire sauce. Ensure all ingredients are submerged in the broth.
  5. Cover the crockpot and set it to cook on low for 6–8 hours, or on high for 3–4 hours. Avoid lifting the lid during cooking.
  6. Once cooking time is complete, taste your chili and adjust spices if necessary. If needed, stir in a slurry of cornstarch and water for a thicker consistency.
