Custard Preparation Steps
  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together egg yolks, granulated sugar, cornstarch, and a pinch of salt until smooth and pale.
  2. Gradually whisk in whole milk while stirring to prevent air bubbles. Place over medium heat and stir constantly for about 5 minutes.
  3. Cook while stirring constantly for 5-8 minutes until the custard thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in freshly squeezed lemon juice, lemon zest, and unsalted butter until well combined.
  5. Pour into serving dishes, cover with plastic wrap to prevent skin formation, and cool slightly before refrigerating for at least 2 hours.
  6. Serve chilled, adding optional garnishes like whipped cream, lemon slices, or fresh mint.
