- 8 ounces penne pasta
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
- Grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and red pepper flakes, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, and basil. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add the cooked penne to the skillet with the sauce, tossing to combine and heat through for about 2-3 minutes.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley and grated Parmesan cheese.
Notes
- For a creamier sauce, stir in 1/4 cup of heavy cream before serving.
- Add cooked Italian sausage or grilled chicken for extra protein and flavor.
