- 1 cup stone-ground grits
- 4 cups water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- Chopped green onions, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, bring the water and salt to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Gradually whisk in the grits, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
- Reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan. Cook the grits for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally until they are thick and creamy.
- Once the grits are cooked, remove them from heat and stir in the butter and cheddar cheese until melted and well combined.
- Season with freshly ground black pepper to taste.
- Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions if desired.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, use chicken or vegetable broth instead of water.
- Add cooked bacon or sausage for a heartier breakfast option.
