Description

A delicious and creamy Southern dish made with stone-ground grits and sharp cheddar cheese, perfect for breakfast or a side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup stone-ground grits
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Chopped green onions, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, bring the water and salt to a boil over medium-high heat.
  2. Gradually whisk in the grits, stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan. Cook the grits for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally until they are thick and creamy.
  4. Once the grits are cooked, remove them from heat and stir in the butter and cheddar cheese until melted and well combined.
  5. Season with freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  6. Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions if desired.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use chicken or vegetable broth instead of water.
  • Add cooked bacon or sausage for a heartier breakfast option.
